Before ordering this Fax machine I did a bit of research, well actually a lot because it wasn't so easy to look up the information I needed on the internet or in Amazon reviews.First question I asked myself was, could I use a Fax with my current AT&T U-verse Voice? Secondly, could I continue to use my phone with an answer machine and two cordless phones without having to use the phone built into the Fax machine? I only wanted a Fax for personal use and; use occasionally, receive and send a maximum of ten pages, no color necessary, speed of sending and receiving not important, cost and efficiency were a must and I would want to use the same phone number for both fax and voice. There was way too many Fax machines to choose from and the prices went from low to very high. No where could I find instructions on the internet as to whether or not I could use a Fax with my AT&T U-Verse Voice.Through Amazon reviews, internet tech sites, brand names such as HP, Brother's and so on I searched and still couldn't get any answers. After a great deal of wasted time I finally gave up and called AT&T U-Verse Voice tech support. The tech assured me I could use a fax with U-Verse Voice. It was very simple, I would plug my extension phone to the fax and use the plug from the extension phone to plug into the fax which was already plugged into my U-Verse Gateway allowing both my phone and fax to operate off VOIP but both phone and fax could not be used simultaneously, that is you can't talk on the phone while receiving or sending a fax. After reading Amazon reviews and internet reviews for the best fax for me, it turned out to be this one, Brother FAX-575. Just to be on the safe side before buying it, I read the manual on-line from page to page and it appeared this would have every thing I needed.Amazon shipped quickly and the installation began. Getting my external phone and fax connected was simple. Putting the fax together from the box was simple. As for programming the Fax, now that got a bit complicated but it appears I got it right. All phones have a dial tone. Brother allows you to send a test fax, registration, to them and they will send one back to you. Sending my two page fax was slow but easy. When Brother sent a Fax to me the fax caught the special fax tone just as my answer machine began. It cut the answer machine off about half way through and began printing the fax. The print was sharp, better than the ones I've seen at work.So far I can say this is the perfect Fax for me. There is still a few things I need to learn but so far so good. If you have AT&T U-verse Voice, you can call their tech support if you want. Be sure to follow the instructions very carefully. You can use the manual they send you or use the one online which you can download and save. Would I recommend this for AT&T U-Verse Voice? ABSOLUTELY! If things change I will come back and update this comment but hopefully that won't have to be done.I used it for business.I have had this several years and it works great to send and receive faxes. At the time of purchase, I needed to fax several documents every month. It made sense to buy a home fax machine rather than taking them to someone else. It worked well with my regular home line. It doesn't take up much space and is easy to store until needed. I definitely recommend it for anyone doing light but regular faxing.I do not plan to make copies with this machine, so unless I get an unwanted fax, I will never know about this feature or about the refill cartridges....however, this is a dandy little fax machine!Easy set-up for the non-tech- and non-mechanically-inclined. Even setting the date and phone number was easy!It actually will accept 10 pages. Small footprint; about the size of 2 CD jewel cases side by side. Lightweight but not flimsy. Imagine it would be a good portable. All cables come with it. Plug and play. Good dox; written well in idiomatic English.Papers process slowly thru it. Be advised it takes 20-25 seconds btw sheets; the page passes thru quickly enough, but it takes a while for the machine to "think" before the next page passes thru. The first couple of times I used it, I thot I had lost the connection at the other end so hung up and redialed. I finally figured out the machine is just slow to send. So, don't be alarmed at the elapsed time btw pages.Whether this would be workhorse enough for moderate business use, I don't know. It's just fine for my personal and light business use. I'd buy it again. Honey, the price is right! mbUPDATE: I did receive a fax, and it works just fine. Not like a laser printer, but perfectly clear and readable.UPDATE: My puppy chewed the electric cord (thank goodness it wasn't plugged in!). As far as I can discern now, the electric cord does not come out! I have wiggled and jiggled it. There were about 2 hair's-breadth strands of copper left in the cord, and a friend was able to fix the cord (safely) so I can use it. He used to wire harnesses for NASA, so I trust his repair. So, guard that cord; it doesn't come out for a replacement! This is an awesome little fax machine and at under $35, it's a great deal. As I am blind, a friend helped me set it up and, after reading the directions, she was able to send our first fax in about 30 minutes. I use MagicJack and was worried that the machine wouldn't work with it but it works just fine. Set up was pretty easy and the directions were very good, explaining everything in detail. We were able to enter time and date, name of the company and return phone number without any issues once we figured out (by reading the directions) how to put a space between the company title name. Brother has a test number that you can send your very first fax to and it will return immediately with a verification. Make sure there is paper in the paper tray/holdr for the return to print out the verification. We did not try the aux phone port since I will not be using this device with my phone system. In my case, I will simply unplug the unit when it's not in use as I rarely, if ever, need to receive a fax. When I do need to send one, I just unplug my main phone and plug the fax cord into the MagicJack and continue with the process. I sent five pages to a customer and they reported that the fax came out fine. I have not tried the copy option and already have a printer/copier so probably will not need the copier function. For a small business or someone who just doesn't want to drive to a store and pay per page, this is a great little piece of equipment for a great price. Finally, I posted a question about attaching this to my MagicJack system on the Amazon questions section and a Brother customer service agent emailed me within an hour with specific instructions. That's nice too.I bought this Fax machine, for home, because I thought it would be useful. The copier part got me. Sometimes I just need a copy of something. However, The deal breaker for me, once I unpacked it, was/is the User Guide. That's no 'guide' - it's a 150 page behemoth. Who is going to read 150 pages of instructions? I just wanted to plug it in and go. No fuss. No muss. No bother. Which is exactly what is doing. Nothing. Sitting there looking nice is all.Too intimidated, at age 75, with a sore brain, to sort it all out. Oh BROTHER, wherefore art thou?As a small compact little fax, the Brother 575 gets the job done easily.Setup is smooth and the user interface, easy to follow.I've used an older chunkier version for years with much success but it finally gave up the ghost!I'm happy to find a reasonably priced compact version which is just as efficient as it's olderpredecessor. The TAD system works great and the print is perfectly suitable for home business use. Here's to another 10years of efficient faxing!I probably bought this in too much haste. That said, the intended purpose was for a small office. The receiving function uses a print ribbon which actually takes on the image of what was received. It generated approximately 25 pages of received faxes. That was it. Replacement ribbons are ridiculously expensive and pose a security issue if not disposed of improperly. If you had an easy to use phone/fax before that didn't need any adjusting other than to plug if in and installing paper and you want to replace it -this is NOT the unit to buy. This is the 3rd one of this model I have purchased in 10 years .I like this model because it is very easy to use and does everything I want for a very good price.the only problem I've had with them is thunder storms, that's what has taken my other ones out.
